A Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan works with Original Medicare to “fill the gaps” in your coverage, and protect you from many of the out-of-pocket costs Original Medicare does not pay.
Medicare Supplement Insurance Plans are designed to help fill the gaps in Original Medicare. If you choose this type of plan, it will help pay your portion of the covered expenses that Original Medicare does not. And it will give you the added freedom to use any doctor, specialist, or hospital that accepts Medicare.
Medicare Supplement Insurance Plans do not cover prescription drugs. However, any Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan can be paired with a standalone Part D prescription drug plan. It’s important to note that you cannot have a Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan and a Medicare Advantage plan at the same time.
You can enroll in an individual Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan at any time of the year. But your acceptance is guaranteed only during the six-month Open Enrollment Period that begins the first day of the month you are enrolled in Medicare Part A and Part B. So it’s a good idea to consider this type of coverage before you enroll in Medicare for the very first time.
If a Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan is offered by your employer, you can enroll in it at retirement, after you have enrolled in Medicare Part A and Part B.
Medicare Supplement Insurance Plans are identified by the letters A, B, C, D, F, G, K, L, M, and N. Each plan covers a different set of costs. Some plans only cover basic benefits. Others may cover a wide range of health care costs.
